A block used for building a structure such as a wall, floor or roof comprises deep recesses in the top and bottom surfaces. A bracket is attached between two blocks by inserting the flanges of the bracket into the deep recesses, thereby creating a central void between the two blocks. The block also comprises protruding portions and recessed portions wherein the protruding portion of one block fits snugly within the recessed portion of an adjacent block. Footing blocks, corner designs and monolithic footing designs are also described herein
