An expanding valve assembly (40) which includes a closure member (18A) supporting at least one segment (30A) supported on one side thereof for movement toward a valve seating surface (10) upon movement of the closure member (18A) in selective response to valve stem (14A) movement. Each segment (30A) carries two spaced-apart, parallel wedging-camming surfaces (44A, 44B) configured to cooperate with complementary spaced-apart, parallel wedging-camming surfaces (42A, 42B) on the closure member (18A) to effect expansion of the segment (30A) during closure of the valve (40). In one embodiment (200) a lift-and-turn mechanism (410) provides selective rotational and axial movement of a closure member (230) during different intervals of movement thereof.
