A method of repairing a damaged railroad rail (1) comprising the steps of: identifying a defect in the rail (1), removing the portion of the rail (1) having a defect and leaving two truncated rail ends (31, 32), preparing the truncated rail ends (31, 32) for welding, and welding the two truncated rail ends (31, 32) together.
