The present invention relates to a bioactive conjugate adapted to coat a metal implant outer surface, which have the following structural formula (I): -R-X-P wherein, R is O or S, adapted to be covalently attached to an implant surface; X is selected from a bond, linear or branched chains of 1 to 30 covalently attached atoms of at least C, N, O, Si or S, rings of 1 to 20 covalently attached atoms of at least C, N, O, Si or S, and a combination thereof; and P is a bioactive molecular moiety which promotes tissue growth, stabilization and integration, and wherein said moiety retains its biological activity. The present invention also relates to a process for the covalent coating of implants with bioactive conjugates.
