The invention relates to a process for preparing thioethers of the formula XIX: (see formula XIX) in which the substituents are as defined below: Rx is halogen, carboxamide, N-alkyul-carboxamide, N,N-dialkylcarboxamide, phenyl, C1-C6-alkyl, C1-C6-alkoxy or C1-C6-alkylthio, m is a number from 0 to 5, and R2 is C1-C6-alkyl, which comprises reacting an aniline of the formula XX: (see formula XX) in which Rx and m are defined as above with a dialkyl disulfide of the formula VII: R2-S-S-R2 VII in which R2 is defined as above, and with an organic nitrite R-ONO in the presence of a catalyst.
