A monitoring signal is transmitted from a fibre-optic connecting unit together with the information signal and a small portion of the optical signal is tapped off at the passive interface and transmitted back to the connector unit where, together with the optical signal received from the other side, it is passed to the opto-electrical converter. The reflected monitoring signal that is contained in the electrical received signal, which is evaluated at the passive optical interface with reference to its reflection, is additionally used to regulate the optical downstream signal level at the passive optical interface.
