The invention concerns a process for distinguishing an internal arc from a breakdown arc detected in an apparatus under a metallic sheathing including at least one set of bars (1) and a circuit-breaker (2) and equipped with a protective system (4) and a calculator (5). The appearance of an arc is detected using a sensor (8) which then generates a signal (c) that is sent to the calculator. The time T = to-ta is calculated, this being the time between to, when a circuit-breaker trigger command (o), transmitted by the protective system to the calculator, is received, and ta, when signal acquisition by the calculator begins.
