The present invention is directed to a water-soluble polyether glycol polymer having: a structural backbone of carbon atoms and oxygen atoms where there are at least two consecutive carbon atoms present between each oxygen atom; a moiety on the backbone of the polymer or a functionalized derivative on the polymer, that is cationic at physiological pH and permits complexation with phosphate or oxalate; and an average molecular weight from about 5,000 to about 750,000 Daltons. These polymers are formulated for oral dosage to reduce the phosphonate or oxalate levels in an animal. The process of preparing these polymers and the method of reducing gastrointestinal absorption of phosphate and oxalate are included.

L'invention concerne un polymère de polyéther-glycol soluble dans l'eau, qui comprend les éléments suivants: un squelette structurel constitué d'atomes de carbone et d'atomes d'oxygène, dans lequel au moins deux atomes de carbone consécutifs sont intercalés entre deux atomes d'oxygène; une fraction située sur le squelette du polymère ou un dérivé fonctionnalisé situé sur le polymère, la fraction et le dérivés étant cationiques à un pH physiologique et permettant la formation de complexes avec du phosphate ou de l'oxylate; et une masse moléculaire moyenne variant entre environ 5000 et 750000 daltons. Les polymères tels que décrits ci-dessus sont formulés pour une dose orale en vue de réduire les niveaux de phosphonate ou d'oxalate chez un animal. L'invention concerne également le processus de préparation desdits polymères et la méthode de réduction d'absorption gastro-intestinale de phosphate et d'oxalate.
