Compositions and methods which ameliorate the virulence of bacterial infection are described wherein the active ingredient modulates transmethylation reactions in bacterial cells. Particularly useful compounds are inhibitors of S-adenosyl me-thionine synthetase (SAMS), of S-adenosyl homocysteine hydrolase (SAHH) and of transmethylases.
