Disclosed is a joint for connecting members including a first structural member having an abutment end, a connector adapted to fit at least partially within the first structural member, and a second structural member adapted to be mechanically but removably connected to the abutment end of the first structural member. The second structural member defines an exterior surface against which the abutment end of the first structural member is adapted to be placed. The second structural member defines means for inter- fitting engagement with the connector. The connector defines a means for inter- fitting engagement with the second structural member. The connector defines at least one means for receiving a camming member, which means for receiving is partially offset with respect to at least one corresponding means for receiving defined by the first structural member. When the camming member is disposed through the means for receiving defined by the first structural member and through the means for receiving defined by the connector, the abutment end of the first structural member is forced against the exterior surface of the second structural member by virtue of forces exerted by the means for camming through the connector, the means for inter-fitting engagement and the first and second structural members. The connector includes means for frictionally engaging the first structural member when the camming member is received within the at least one means for receiving. With the joint of the invention, the connecting members can be locked relative to one another against rotational, longitudinal and transverse movement by means of a very simple and unexposed locking assembly.
