The present invention is directed to an expandable pre-formed plug (10) that is suitable for sealing and/or structurally reinforcing a structure member (20) having surfaces defining a space therebetween. The plug (10) is comprised of at least an expandable inner core (12) having an outer surface and a transportable outer skin (14) that preferably substantially encapsulates the core (12). In a preferred embodiment, the shape of the unexpanded plug (10) is designed to mate with the surfaces that define a space therebetween upon expansion. The adhesive skin (14) is generally dry to the touch at room temperature, however, upon initiation of expansion, the inner core expands and the surrounding skin (14) is displaced in a coordinated manner. After some period of expansion, the outer skin (14) preferably durably adheres or bonds to the walls (22) of the surfaces defining a space therebetween and the outer surface of the core (12). A method for using such a plug (10) is also disclosed.
La présente invention concerne un obturateur (10) préformé expansible permettant de sceller et/ou de renforcer structurellement un élément (20) de structure dont les surfaces définissent entre elles un espace. Ledit obturateur (10) comprend au moins une partie centrale (12) expansible comportant une surface extérieure et une enveloppe (14) extérieure transportable qui, de préférence, encapsule sensiblement la partie centrale (12). Dans un mode de réalisation préféré, la forme de l'obturateur (10) non dilaté est conçue pour correspondre aux surfaces définissant un espace entre elles lors de l'expansion. L'enveloppe adhésive (14) est généralement sèche au toucher à température ambiante, cependant, dès le début de l'expansion, la partie centrale se dilate et l'enveloppe (14) autour est déplacée de façon coordonnée. Après une période d'expansion, l'enveloppe extérieure (14) adhère ou se fixe, de préférence durablement, aux parois (22) des surfaces définissant un espace entre elles et à la surface extérieure de la partie centrale (12).
