Polyurethane polymers are made from a reaction mixture that contains a polyisocyanate, a hydroxylmethyl-containing fatty acid or ester, and another polyol, polyamine or aminoalcohol. The carboxylic acid or ester group on the hydroxymethyl~containing fatty acid or ester are capable of engaging in a variety of reactions with the polyisocyanate and/or amine or hydroxyl groups present in the reaction mixture. This allows for good quality, high molecular weight polymers to be produced even though the hydroxymethyl-containing fatty acid or ester tends to be a low functionality material.

L'invention concerne des polymères polyuréthane à base d'un mélange réactionnel qui renferme un polyisocyanate, un acide gras ou un ester contenant de l'hydroxyméthyle, et un autre polyol, un polyamine ou amino-alcool. Le groupe acide carboxylique ou ester sur l'acide gras ou l'ester contenant de l'hydroxyméthyle peut entrer dans une variété de réactions avec le polyisocyanate et/ou des groupes amine ou hydroxyle présents dans le mélange réactionnel, ce qui permet de produire des polymères d'une meilleure qualité, d'un poids moléculaire élevé, même si l'acide gras ou l'ester contenant de l'hydroxyméthyle a tendance à être un matériau à faible niveau de fonctionnalité.
