An elongate member, such as a solid core exchange wire guide with a polymeric outer coating, includes at least a first system of indicia located on the proximal portion of the elongate member that comprises a series of scale reference markings. In one embodiment and use thereof, the wire guide, which includes a radiopaque marker within the distal portion, is advanced into a body passage. The radiopaque marker is withdrawn to a second position and the new scale reference marking is noted. The distance between the two positions along the scale is then calculated to determine the length of the structure. To aid in the ability of the endoscopist to maintain the position of an exchange wire guide during a medical procedure, a second system of indicia, such as oblique markings or helical striping, may be included for easier detection of longitudinal movement.
