Methods are provided that utilize an estrogen compound to confer cytoprotection on a population of cells associated with an ischemic focus in a subject. The estrogen compound may be administered to a subject at a proximate time to the ischemic event to confer cytoprotection. Estrogen compounds can be used to treat ischemic events that, for example, arise from cerebrovascular disease, subarachnoid hemorrhage, myocardial infarct, surgery and trauma. Examples of estrogen compounds include .alpha.-isomers and .beta.-isomers.

L'invention porte sur des méthodes recourant à un composé oestrogénique pour conférer une cytoprotection à une population de cellules associée à un foyer ischémique chez un sujet. Le composé oestrogénique peut être administré au sujet à un moment proche de l'accident ischémique pour conférer la cytoprotection. Les composés oestrogéniques peuvent servir à traiter des accidents ischémiques survenant par exemple dans le cadre de maladies cérébrovasculaires, d'hémorragies sous-arachnoïdiennes, d'infarctus du myocarde, d'opérations chirurgicales ou de traumatismes. Les composés oestrogéniques sont par exmple des isomères .alpha. et .beta..
