An equalization scheme for digital transmissions across a time dispersive radio channel, h(D), is described which reduces the computational complexity required at the portable receiver. The scheme utilizes a decision- feedback equalizer (DFE) at the base-station to equalize transmissions from the portable and a Tomlinson-Harishima (TH) precoder with forward filter to pre-equalize transmissions from the base-station. No equalizer filters are required at the portable unit, giving a reduction in hardware complexity at that terminal. Transmissions to and from the portable unit are time division duplexed on the same carrier frequency. A data sequence is transmitted from the portable to the base station which is used to either estimate the channel impulse response or optimize a DFE. The coefficients of the DFE are then used directly to characterize the TH precoder and forward filter or, alternatively, the coefficients to the TH precoder and DFE can be calculated fro the channel estimate. Data that is pre-equalized by this structure will have a reduced amount of ISI when received at the portable unit. The system is retrained within the coherence time of the channel or, alternatively, a channel estimator or the DFE can be used to track the channel, with regular updating of the pre-equalizer parameters.
