ABSTRACT A laser device, if directly amplitude modulated, exhibits an unwanted frequency modulation which broadens its emission spectrum. The unwanted frequency modulation is eliminated by carrying out a conversion of the modulated optical signal wavelength, using a semiconductor optical amplifier as a converter and another nonmodulated laser as a conversion signal generator. Wavelength conversion takes place in the amplifier due to gain modulation induced by saturation. An output signal at the conversion signal frequency, taken from a filter following the converter, presents an amplitude modulation equal and opposite to that of the modulated signal at input, but does not show frequency modulation.
