The present invention comprises a method, materials and apparatus for investigating asthma in humans using dust mite allergen. The dust mite allergen is prepared to be of a controlled size such that particles are respirable, effectively aerosolized, and deliver a significant amount of allergen. The dust mite allergen is applied in a controlled manner within an environmental exposure chamber to elucidate the etiological links between dust mite allergen concentration and asthma response in humans. The environmental exposure chamber is specially-designed to promote homogeneity of allergen concentration. Preferably, the dust mite allergen preparation comprises particles having an average diameter of less than 25 microns, and more preferably 5-10 microns. Correlation between aerosolized particle count and allergen concentration enables "real-time" allergen concentration estimates without the use of expensive and time-consuming assay techniques.
La présente invention concerne un procédé, des matériaux et un appareil d'étude de l'asthme chez l'homme à l'aide d'un allergène d'acariens. L'allergène d'acariens est préparé de façon à présenter une taille régulée de telle sorte que les particules soient respirables, efficacement mises en aérosol et délivrent une quantité significative d'allergène. L'allergène d'acariens est appliqué de manière contrôlée à l'intérieur d'une chambre d'exposition à l'environnement afin d'élucider les liens étiologiques entre la concentration d'allergène d'acariens et la réaction asthmatique chez l'homme. La chambre d'exposition à l'environnement est spécialement conçue pour favoriser l'homogénéité de la concentration d'allergène. De préférence, la préparation d'allergène d'acariens comporte des particules présentant un diamètre moyen inférieur à 25 microns, et mieux encore de 5 à 10 microns. Une corrélation entre le nombre de particules mises en aérosol et la concentration d'allergène permet des estimations "en temps réel" de la concentration d'allergène sans utiliser de techniques de dosage onéreuses et longues.
