Abstract. This invention develops a method for absolute quantitation in computer assisted tomograph systems. This includes the definition of the dimension and the position of a tumour, as well as the evaluation of the amount of drug delivered to a target volume and to surrounding tissues, from the image. The defined objectives can be achieved using the calibrated FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) values of the distribution of events versus distance in the tumour images to determine the dimension and the position of the tumour. The activity concentration in a target volume and the target - to - nontarget activity ratios can be obtained from the image using a new modified filter in the reconstruction of the image and the calibration of the system for this filter. The filter was tested on Positron Emission Tomograph (PET) images. The obtained images reflect the real distribution of activity used in a phantom. Using this filter, the colour scale of the image can be expressed in absolute units (µCi/ml) and the activity concentration can be evaluated in each pixel of the image or in each volume element of the body.
