MEDICAL GUIDEWIRE Abstract of the Disclosure A medical guidewire (10) has an elongated body, a relatively more flexible distal tip region and a core (12) having a body (32) of first diameter, a distal portion (34) of relatively smaller diameter, and a generally flat distal end (38) disposed in the tip region and spaced proximally from a tip element (22) defining the guidewire distal end. The core distal portion is formed of nitinol. A first coil (14) has its proximal end joined to the core body by a coupling (37) and extends along the core to a termination point in the tip region, proximal of the core end. A relatively more flexible second coil (18) has a proximal end joined to the first coil and a distal end joined to the tip element. Safety and transition wires (24, 26) are secured to the core and have generally flat distal ends (28, 30) within the second coil, the safety wire joined distally to the tip element and the transition wire terminating within the second coil intermediate of the distal ends of the core and safety wire.
