Described are hydrophilic non-ionic water-soluble high-molecular polyurethanes with a specific viscosity of at least 0.4 (measured on a 1 % aqueous solution at 20 °C). The polyurethanes can be produced essentially from polyethylene glycol and a diisocyanate at 80 to 200 °C without using a catalyst or solvent. They can be used as a basis for adhesives, in particular fusion and solvent adhesives, to bond e.g. wall-paper and labels. They can also be used as stabilizers in emulsion polymerization and as viscosity-increasing agents in aqueous systems.
