Plasma Addressed Liquid Crystal display devices in which liquid crystal cells serve as a display element and plasma discharge regions far driving them are adjacently arranged, a space ranging over all the scanning units is provided. Such a space has no partitions in the discharge regions. These discharge regions are formed as a continuous space over the entire screen, or every plural scanning units. On the base plate, discharge electrode pairs for generating discharge plasma are provided. Thus, discharge plasma generated in the vicinity of each discharge electrode pair serves as a scanning unit. The liquid crystal cell functions as a sampling capacitor, and the discharge plasma functions as a sampling capacitor. By scanning discharge plasma, an image display is carried out.
