A handpiece [10] particularly suited for medical/dental applications in which a rotary tool [13] is used upon and in proximity with anatomical structures. The handpiece [10] has an anti-friction bearing assembly [18, 19] which mounts the rotary tool [13]. At least the rolling elements [19c] of the bearing assembly [18, 19] are formed of ceramic material. The instrument [10] may be sterilized repeatedly without requiring lubrication either in use or between sterilization cycles.
