ABSTRACT A method for operating a control system by solving the constrained optimization problem involved in the Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach which reduces the on-line computational requirements by a factor of about 1000. The reduction in computational effort is achieved by replacing general purpose off-the-shelf optimization algorithms, such as, Quadratic Programming (QP) and Linear Programming (LP), currently being used in the control system, by a new specialized algorithm. The method of the invention exploits the structure of certain MPC formulations and provides a direct (non-iterative) path to the desired solution.
