The method proposed for manufacturing moulded articles from cellular plastic is designed so that production of the mouldings requires little vacuum and steam and the mouldings have a very low moisture content. This is achieved by using a mould whose cavity walls are made of poorly heat-conducting material or have a suitable low-conducting coating. The mould cavity is evacuated, the expandable granulated material is fed under pressure into the evacuated mould and, when the cavity is filled, steam passed into the evacuated mould. The steam is switched off and the mould cavity again evacuated, the vacuum thus produced being maintained during the stabilization phase. After the stabilization phase, the mould is opened and the moulding ejected using pressure.
