A single polarization fiber and/or amplifier includes a non-polarization preserving fiber (10) having a fiber grating tap (12) which has a predetermined length and strength (.DELTA.n/n) and is oriented at a predetermined angle .theta. and has a grating spacing D so as to couple-out of the fiber (10) a predetermined amount of one polarization (24) over a predetermined wavelength range of an input light (16) and pass the other polarization (28) as output light (26), the grating length being substantially the length of the fiber (10). Alternatively, all or a portion of the fiber (10) may be doped to form a polarization sensitive optical amplifier.

Fibre et/ou amplificateur à polarisation unique comprenant une fibre (10) ne conservant pas la polarisation, pourvue d'un point de prise (12) de sélecteur de mode ayant une longueur et une force (.DELTA.n/n) prédéterminées, orienté à un angle .theta. prédéterminé et ayant un pas de sélecteur de mode D conçu pour extraire de la fibre (10) une quantité prédéterminée d'une première composante de polarisation (24) sur une gamme de longueurs d'onde d'une lumière d'entrée (16) et pour laisser passer l'autre composante de polarisation (28) comme lumière de sortie (26), la longueur du sélecteur de mode étant sensiblement celle de la fibre (10). Autrement, tout ou partie de la fibre (10) peut être dopée pour former un amplificateur optique sensible à la polarisation.
