The present invention refers to a container adaptable for using a sliding lid. The container comprises, in combination, a base and a first and second pair of parallel walls extending up from the base. The container is provided with column supports, which are located basically in all corners of the container and extend adjacent the corners. Lid- retaining channels extend in parallel, upwardly from at least one of the first and second pair of parallel walls. Each lid-retaining channels has an upper and a lower ledge connected by a web, so that a U in cross-section is formed. The U in cross-section is turned at 90 degrees and open toward an interior of the container. The column supports and the lid- retaining channels can have coplanar tops, or the tops of column supports can be slightly higher. Insertion means is provided in each of the upper ledge of a pair of the lid- retaining channels, which are parallel. The insertion means comprises a notch formed by interrupting each upper ledge proximate to a corner of the container.
