A sanitary napkin having a main body including at least three superposed functional layers, namely a fluid permeable body facing layer, an absorbent layer and a liquid impermeable undergarment facing layer. The sanitary napkin has flaps adapted to be folded around the edges of an undergarment of a wearer. The flaps are physically associated with respective longitudinal sides of the main body and are characterized by a rigidity sufficient to cause the longitudinal sides to fold upwardly when the flaps are parted to receive between them the crotch portion of the undergarment of the user. The upwardly folded longitudinal sides form upstanding barriers to limit the likelihood of failure as a result of side leakage.

L'invention concerne une serviette hygiénique ayant une partie principale dotée d'au moins trois couches fonctionnelles superposées, notamment une couche perméable faisant face au corps, une couche absorbante et une couche imperméable faisant face au sous-vêtement. La serviette hygiénique comporte des has rabats conçus pour être pliés autour des extrémités du sous- vêtement. Les rabats sont physiquement associés aux côtés longitudinaux respectifs de la partie principale et sont caractérisés par une rigidité suffisante pour amener les côtés longitudinaux à se plier vers le haut lorsque les rabats sont sectionnés pour recevoir entre eux la fourche du sous- vêtement de l'utilisateur. Les côtés longitudinaux pliés vers le haut forment des barrières verticales pour limiter la possiblité d'une défaillance à la suite d'une fuite latérale.
