ABSTRACT This invention seeks to provide a method for continuously determining the variation in detritus in a drilling fluid discharged during a well drilling operation; by passing the drilling fluid discharged from the borehole through a shale shaker to remove the detritus and returning the drilling fluid from which the detritus has been removed by the shale shaker to the well drilling operation. The detritus is passed via a conveyor device over a weighing device connected to at least one load cell, whereby variations in weight of the conveyed detritus cause variations in stress on the at least one load cell; and continuously monitoring the variation in electrical output produced by the load cell(s) as a function of the variations in weight of the detritus.
