A fishing rod monitoring apparatus includes a spring metal clip made from a single resilient piece of bent metal. The clip is triangular in cross-section with a spine and a pair of opposed jaw members connected to opposite sides of the spine with remote ends of the jaw members biased toward each other. The spine and opposed jaw members define a triangular fishing rod receptacle. Cushioning pads line the fishing rod receptacle. A pair of cooperating levers is provided for moving the jaws apart to open the fishing rod receptacle to receive a fishing rod. At least one bell is secured to the spine of the clip.
