Modified plants are disclosed which have enhanced starch-producing capability as a result of a change in the concentration of one or more of the metabolites which take part in glycolysis and the TCA cycle in the plant. The effect may be achieved for example by a genetic modification to reduce the activity of NAD-malic enzyme.
