A method test reagent and test strip for a quick visual non-instrumental detection of chloride at a wide range of levels for use in swimming pools and spas particularly. It utilizes as an indicator substance a silver complex of 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine combination with a source of ferrous ion, a citric acid stabilizer, and a yellow background dye such as thioflavin-T. Depending upon the level of chloride, the test solution on a paper matrix will range from yellow to moss green, blue, and finally navy blue.
