A joint prosthesis for replacing a joint between two elongated bones of the hand. A first member is provided with an elongated stem for reception in one of the elongated bones and includes a head remote from the stem, the head having a convex articulating surface and lateral articulating surfaces adjacent the convex surface and on each side thereof. A second member has a stem for reception in the other bone and a base remote from the stem, the base having a concave articulating surface and lateral articulating surfaces on each side thereof, the concave and lateral surfaces being adapted to engage and articulate with the respective convex and lateral articulating surfaces of the first member. The lateral articulating surfaces of the first and second members being positioned to fully engage and articulate with each other to thereby restrain lateral articulation only when the bones are articulated through at least 30 degrees of flexion, and at 90 degrees of flexion, the force between said members is borne primarily by said lateral articulating surfaces.
Un premier organe (16) comporte une tige allongée prévue pour se loger dans l'un des os allongés, et une tête éloignée de la tige. Cette tête comporte une surface d'articulation convexe et des surfaces d'articulation latérales (42, 46) adjacentes à la surface convexe (32), de chaque côté de cette dernière. Un deuxième organe (14) comporte une tige prévue pour se loger dans l'autre os, ainsi qu'une base éloignée de la tige. Cette base comporte une surface d'articulation concave (52) et des surfaces d'articulation latérales (72, 74) de chaque côté de cette dernière. Les surfaces concaves et latérales sont adaptées pour se mettre en prise et s'articuler avec les surfaces d'articulation latérales et convexes du premier organe. Les surfaces d'articulation latérales des premier et deuxième organes sont positionnées de manière à se mettre totalement en prise et s'articuler l'une avec l'autre, et à réfréner ainsi l'articulation latérale, uniquement lorsque les os sont articulés selon une flexion de 30 degrés au moins. En outre, lors d'une flexion de 90 degrés, la force entre les organes est essentiellement supportée par les surfaces d'articulation latérales.
