An automated packaging apparatus useful for packaging a low or high profile product such as a food product. The apparatus includes a conveyor, means for sealing a tubular film, means for sealing the mouth end and trailing end of the tubular film, a press for compressing the tube to force excess gas or air therefrom while forming and sealing the package, means for separating the package from the tube, and means for moving the press into compressing contact with the tube. The press has a concave, resilient, film-contacting surface for obtaining optimal compression of the tube.
