Improvements are provided herein in tensioners for power transmission belts, in a method for making such tensioners, to annular pads which are made of friction material for such power transmission belts, and to methods for making such annular pads. In one embodiment, the tensioner includes a support to be fixed relative to the belt. A belt-engaging element is carried by the support and is movable relative thereto. First springs are operatively-associated with the support and with the belt-engaging element for urging the belt-engaging element relative to the support and against the belt with a force to tension the belt. Frictional dampeners are operatively associated with the support and with the belt-engaging elements relative to the support in at least one direction of movement thereof. The dampeners have a longitudinal axis. The support includes a shaft having a longitudinal axis, which is fixed from movement relative to the belt-engaging elements. The belt-engaging elements have a portion thereof which is rotatably carried by the shaft so as to rotate relative to the shaft. The dampeners include a pan of fractionally-engaging, first and second parts. The first part comprises an annular pad of friction material that is coaxially disposed and is axially movable on the shaft relative to the second part. Second springs urge the first part against the second part with a certain spring force. The first part of the dampener has a guide thereon. One of the supports and the belt-engaging element have openings therein that receive the guides therein to guide axial movement of the first part. The improvement is provided by forming the annular pad and the guides of the first part of the dampener as a one-piece homogeneous member.
