ABSTRACT A flexible package has a shape retaining member at its upper end. This allows merchandise having elasticity, such as disposable diapers, disposable tissue, and sanitary articles to be packaged without over compressing them, and high speed packing can be performed while maintaining the shape-retaining properties of the contained articles. The package can maintain both its shape and prevent deformation of the contents of the package. The rim or edge of the flexible sheet around the package opening is prevented from tearing or breaking during the removal of the package contents. In one embodiment a belt, made from thick paper or paperboard, forms a rectangular frame around the contents. In another embodiment, the package has a rectangular shape- retaining member as its upper surface to insure that the package retains its shape when the packages are stacked. Perforations in the shape-retaining member define and form an opening the member through which the contents of the package can be removed easily.
