A shade having a plurality of slats. The slats are supported in a ladder having front and rear members and a plurality of cross members extending between the front and rear members. Cross members support the slats. The slats can be retracted. The slats can also be tilted by a mechanism comprising at least one roller at an upper or lower end of the shade. There is a drive member to rotate the roller and a brake to stop the roller at a pre-determined position so that the tilting of the slats is achieved by movement of the drive member. Compared with the prior art, the control for tilting is greatly simplified. The cog gears and the like that form a feature of the prior art are eliminated by the invention.
