A multipart piston for a plunger lift system for a hydrocarbon well includes a sleeve providing a passage therethrough and a member for closing the passage in the sleeve. The sleeve and the member are movable independently downwardly into the well, being united in the well near the hydrocarbon formation. They provide an exterior seal for upward movement together in the well for pushing liquid, above the piston, upwardly. The ratio of weight to downwardly facing surface area of the sleeve is greater than the ratio of weight to downwardly facing surface area of the member.
