For the preparation of diesters of thiocarbamoylmethane- phosphonic acid, of the formula (I) Image (I) in which R1 and R2 are an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, where R1 and R2 may be identical or different or may together form a ring, diesters of cyanomethanephos- phonic acid, of the formula (II) Image (II) in which R1 and R2 are as defined above, are reacted with hydrogen sulfide at temperatures of from 0 to 150°C for up to 80 hours in the presence of a catalyst under pressure.
