Downstream and upstream signals in a transmission system are attenuated by different amounts to allow upstream signals to be originated at individual subscribers (22-22, 30-30) at the same level yet be received at a common upstream amplifier (19b) at substantially the same level. Different attenuation of downstream and upstream signals is achieved by the combination of a pair of directional couplers (110a and 110b) and a diplex filter (132). The couplers and diplex filter collectively separate a downstream signal destined for the subscriber from an upstream signal generated by the subscriber. The upstream signal which is separated may be attenuated by a matching loss element (138) to attenuate the upstream signal by an amount greater or less than the downstream signal.

Dans un système de transmission, des signaux d'aval et d'amont sont atténués à différents degrés afin de permettre à des signaux d'amont d'être envoyés par des abonnés particuliers (22-22, 30-30) à un niveau correspondant essentiellement au niveau auquel ils seront reçus par un amplificateur d'amont commun. L'atténuation des signaux d'aval et d'amont à différents degrés se fait en combinant une paire de coupleurs directifs (110a et 110b) et un filtre diplex (132). Les coupleurs et le filtre diplex séparent collectivement un signal d'aval destiné à l'abonné, d'un signal d'amont généré par l'abonné. Le signal d'amont qui est séparé peut être atténué par un atténuateur d'adaptation (138) afin d'affaiblir le signal d'amont d'une valeur supérieure ou inférieure à celle applicable au signal d'aval.
