The present invention includes a method and apparatus for preparing a flitch (13), particularly a tapered flitch, to present its outermost veneer-producing zone substantially parallel to a knife. The apparatus comprises a drill mechanism (102) for drilling a plurality of holes (90, 92) in the flitch (13) and a mechanism (100) for holding a flitch. The holes (90, 92) are arranged in a predetermined pattern and extend from a flitch mounting surface (18) into the flitch distances defining a boundary between the veneer-producing zone (21) and the staylog-engaging zone (23). A method for preparing a flitch (13) for slicing comprises positioning the flitch in a preparing position and forming a plurality of dog-receiving holes (90) in the flitch (13) in a predetermined pattern with each hole (90) extending through a staylog-engaging zone (23) to the veneer-producing zone (23) so the flitch (13) may be held for slicing by a plurality of dogs (59) in the dog-receiving holes (90) by engaging the flitch.
L'invention se rapporte à un dispositif qui permet de préparer une quartelle (13) aux fins de tranchage dans la zone d'engagement des barres de déroulage excentré (23) pour quartelle. Le dispositf comprend un mécanisme de perçage (102) qui permet de percer une pluralité de trous (90, 92) dans une quartelle (13) et un mécanisme (100) de maintien pour quartelle. Les trous (90, 92) sont disposés selon un schéma prédéterminé et s'étendent depuis une surface de montage de quartelle (18) vers la zone de fabrication du placage (21) afin de définir une limite entre ladite zone (21) et la zone d'engagement des barres de déroulage excentré (23). On décrit par ailleurs un procédé permettant de préparer une quartelle (13) pour le tranchage, qui consiste à disposer la quartelle en position de préparation et à percer une pluralité de trous (90) pour accueillir les clameaux dans la quartelle (13), en respectant un schéma prédéterminé de sorte que chaque trou (90) s'étende à travers la zone d'engagement des barres de déroulage excentré (23) jusqu'à la zone de fabrication du placage. On monte la quartelle (13) sur la barre de déroulage excentré (10) en alignant la pluralité de trous (90) accueillant les clameaux avec une pluralité de clameaux (54) et en introduisant ceux-ci (54) dans les trous (90) destinés à les accueillir.
