A fireplace has a glass window and a mesh screen. The fireplace has a viewing opening into a firebox generally surrounded by an enclosure except about the viewing opening. The glass window encloses the opening of the firebox. The mesh screen extends over the glass window of the firebox. The mesh window is constructed of a woven wire mesh. The woven wire mesh reduces the amount of incident light to the glass window from outside the firebox, thus reducing the amount of glare perceived from the viewing area. The mesh screen may be located on the side of the glass opposite the firebox to provide a relatively cool protective barrier in front of the glass window which has the potential of becoming too hot to touch. Various shapes of the mesh window are possible including a bay window-like shape. The screen assembly may be used with various 'types of fireplaces including direct vent and room air vented gas fireplaces. The screen and glass may be provided as a door component for a fireplace.
