The present invention concerns liquid transfer devices and, more particularly volume definition in such devices used for chemical diagnostic testing in extra-laboratory situations. In a capillary flow liquid transfer device a liquid is transported along a channel to a volume definition site, such as a sample site where sample has been applied in excess. A second channel leads to and crosses a notional area upstream of the site relative to flow in the first channel. The device is designed such that when liquid flow is initiated in both channels simultaneously, flow in the second channel reaches the interception area and carries off any excess sample before flow in the first channel reaches the interception area. This automatically prevents excess sample from being entrained in the main flow and affecting an analytical result.
