An improved reception system for the shelf assemblies of an article storage and dispensing system includes an article sensor, such as an electric eye, that is not dependent on weight, and a separate article arresting system and engages and smoothly decelerates an incoming article to rest, thereby reducing damage to fragile articles, such as glass containers.
