An apparatus for seeding and fertilizing a field in a single pass comprises a number of fertilizer placement openers and a number of seed placement openers that attach to a frame of a planting apparatus. Each seed placement opener comprises a seed dispensing knife which creates a seed furrow and places seed in the seed furrow and a packer wheel. The depth of the seed furrow is adjusted by the positioning of a packer wheel. Each fertilizer opener creates a fertilizer furrow and places fertilizer into the fertilizer furrow. The seed placement openers are attached to the frame such that the seed placement openers create a series of parallel seed furrows. The fertilizer placement openers are attached to the frame such that the fertilizer placement openers create fertilizer furrows substantially mid-way between adjacent pairs of seed furrows. A method of single pass placement of seed and fertilizer in accordance with the apparatus of the present invention is also disclosed.
