Very potent, stable, odorless, and phenol-free virucidal solutions are active at high dilution when used for surface decontamination of animate and inanimate objects. The virucidal compositions described are efficacious in a matter of minutes against both the lipophilic and the more resistant hydrophilic viruses. The three active ingredients in these virucidal compositions are the glutaraldehyde monomer in equilibrium with its hydrates and polymers, hydrogen-bonded glycol molecules to eliminate aldehydes odor, and an anionic surfactant of the alkyl sulfate, alkyl sulfonate, alcohol sulfate or alkyl aryl sulfonate type. A preferred anionic surfactant would be the Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS), which exhibits strong cidal synergism against the Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 when mixed at a concentration as low as 0.0005% in diluted glutaraldehyde aqueous solutions (0.0025%). Improved virucidal killing at higher dilutions of the same formula were observed with the more resistant Coxsackie B viruses. Because of the low concentration of active ingredients, these solutions exhibit a very low toxicity, making them suitable for topical applications as antiseptics.

Solutions virucides très puissantes, stables, sans odeur et exemptes de phénol, actives à haute dilution pour la décontamination en surface d'objets inertes ou animés. Les compositions virucides décrites agissent en quelques minutes contre les virus lipophiles et les virus hydrophiles plus résistants. Les trois principes actifs présents dans ces compositions virucides sont le monomère de glutaraldéhyde en équilibre avec ses hydrates et ses polymères, les molécules de glycol à liaison hydrogène pour l'élimination de l'odeur d'aldéhydes, et un surfactif anionique de type sulfate d'alkyle, sulfonate d'alkyle, sulfate d'alcool ou sulfonate alkylique arylique. Le surfactif anionique est de préférence le sulfate de sodium et de dodécyle, lequel exerce un puissant synergisme bactéricide contre l'Herpes simplex type 1 lorsqu'il est présent à une concentration très faible, comme 0,0005 %, dans des solutions aqueuses diluées de glutaraldéhyde (0,0025 %). On a observé un pouvoir virucide plus grand à des dilutions plus élevées de la même formulation, dans le cas du virus Coxsackie B plus résistant. Par suite de la faible concentration des principes actifs, ces solutions sont très peu toxiques, ce qui en fait des antiseptiques tout à fait acceptables pour les applications topiques.
