Such oligonuclotides are called self-stabilized oligonucleotides and comprise two regions: a target hybridizing region having a nucleotide sequence complementary to a nucleic acid sequence that is from a virus, a pathogenic organism, or a cellular gene; and a self-complementary region having an oligonucleotide sequence complementary to a nucleic acid sequence that is within the self-stabilized oligonucleotide.
