The present invention provides a method and a system for alternatively activating, in a data processing system, a replaceable hardware unit of a first or a second type, providing a predetermined set of functional capabilities, whereby said data processing system is being configured to allow selectively electronically enabling of at least a subset of said functional capabilities. Initially a replaceable hardware unit is provided to the data processing system. Then, the type of the provided replaceable hardware unit gets determined. Then, if the provided replaceable hardware unit is of the first type, the subset of functional capabilities to be electronically enabled is determined and, subsequently, enabled. Alternatively, if said provided replaceable hardware unit is of the second type, the entire functional capabilities of said provided replaceable hardware unit are enabled, instead.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un système permettant d'activer alternativement, dans un système de traitement de données, une unité matérielle remplaçable d'un premier ou d'un deuxième type, fournissant un ensemble prédéterminé de capacités fonctionnelles, ledit système de traitement de données étant configuré pour permettre une activation sélective par voie électronique d'au moins un sous-ensemble desdites capacités fonctionnelles. Une unité matérielle remplaçable est d'abord fournie au système de traitement de données. Ensuite, le type d'unité matérielle remplaçable est déterminé. Puis, si l'unité matérielle remplaçable fournie est du premier type, le sous-ensemble de capacités fonctionnelles devant être activé par voie électronique est déterminé et, par la suite, activé. En variante, si ladite unité matérielle remplaçable est du deuxième type, toutes les capacités fonctionnelles de ladite unité matérielle remplaçable sont alors activées.
