ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A navigation device, for attachment to a user's belt has a spool for storing a line which can be pulled from the device as the user advances, a first sensor for sensing the withdrawal of the line from the spool and providing a first signal corresponding to the length of withdrawn line and a second sensor for providing a second signal corresponding to the direction of advance of the user. The signals are stored until used to compute the location of the user. - 14 -
