Small crystals are made by mixing a solution of a desired substance with an anti-solvent in a fluidic vortex mixer in which the residence time is less than 1 s, for example 10 ms. The liquid within the fluidic vortex mixer (12) is subjected to high intensity ultrasound from a transducer (20, 22) in or on the wall of the mixer, or coupled to a pipe supplying liquid to the mixer. The solution very rapidly becomes supersaturated, and the ultrasound can induce a very large number of nuclei for crystal growth. Small crystals, for example less than 5 µm, are formed that may be of a suitable sise for use in inhalers.
Selon l'invention, on produit des petits cristaux en mélangeant une solution d'une substance désirée avec un antisolvant dans un mélangeur vortex fluidique, le temps de séjour du mélange étant inférieur à 1s, par exemple égal à 10 ms. Le liquide présent dans le mélangeur vortex fluidique (12) est exposé à l'action d'ultrasons d'intensité élevée émis par un transducteur (20, 22) situé dans ou sur la paroi du mélangeur ou accouplé à une conduite acheminant le liquide au mélangeur. La solution devient ainsi rapidement sursaturée et les ultrasons peuvent induire la création d'une grande quantité de noyaux pour la croissance cristalline. On obtient ainsi de petits cristaux, par exemple d'une taille inférieure à 5 µm qui leur permet d'être utilisés dans des inhalateurs.
