In one embodiment, a scheme is disclosed for managing network traffic load upon outage of a network node (304A) disposed in a wireless packet data network (300), wherein the network node (304A) is adapted to serve a substantially large number of mobile nodes (102) using respective data connections. Upon encountering an outage-causing condition (404), the network node (304A) releases the data connections and determines to suppress generation of session termination messages (406) that would have otherwise been generated for transmission to the mobile nodes (102).
